This print shows the impressive ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, located near Helmsley in North Yorkshire. Founded in 1132, it was the first Cistercian abbey to be established in the North of England and quickly became one of the most powerful monasteries; at its peak in the 1160s its most famous abbot Aelred headed up a 650 strong community.

It is an original reduction linocut print, using just one block of lino and a process of carving away the lino between each layer of colour to produce the final image. These linocut prints are handmade from start to finish - hand carved, inked and handprinted, and as such they will have small variations between prints - making each print into a unique artwork.
